Is Russia Defending or Attacking?

The Russian Naval Base in Sevastopol is on the south western coastal region of Crimea, quite a distance from the Russian borders and a trip over sea.

Could Ukraine want control of Crimea so they can control the Fleet and a major naval base? They wouldn't have to start from scratch building their own fleet or a base. They have already received half the fleet from Russia in 1995; you think maybe Russia is just defending the other half?

In 1997 the Ukraine and Russia signed a treaty to allow Russia to keep its fleet in Sevastopol for 20 years; yes it is up in 2017.

When former President Viktor Yuschenko, pro-western, warned Russia they would have to leave their key port…no negotiations, nothing in 2017 Russia was rattled to say the least, but did Russia jump on the band wagon and start shooting? Did they invade Crimea or even Ukraine to protect their interests? No.

When, Ukraine ran THAT President out and Yanukovych was elected in 2010 he agreed to extend the lease until 2042 in exchange for discounts on Russian gas supplies, how does this not benefit both Ukraine and Russia? There were negotiations and a plan was put in place to benefit both countries for the future. Ukraine would receive a discount on fuel and Russia could keep its Naval base...win-win.

Many Russians believe Russian President Khrushchev’s transfer of Crimea to the Ukraine in 1954 was illegitimate. He himself was Ukrainian.

Since Ukraine won its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 this country has had no real success with a reliable democratic government. That is 23 years of corruption and “democracy” has had no place in helping them combat their fighting amongst themselves.

Russia doesn't care about what the Ukraine does with their government, they care about Crimea, they care about Sevastopol and they care about their Russian people who are dealing with inequality. By the sounds of it many of the people in Crimea and the Ukraine care about the same things.

Western countries are arrogant in sending weapons and planes to “show” other countries how to fix their problems. We do not have God given rights to tell others what is best for them. We cannot even take care of our own how dare we tell another country how to deal with their problems.

We got our butts handed to us in Afghanistan; do we want to lose more Canadian soldiers in a conflict that has NOTHING to do with us?
